“Laminin”

I am not a biology expert… even I love science, I never heard about “laminin”. What is it??!! nyaha! (nosebleed?)

Here’s the story: When I checked my friendster account, ‘kuya andy’ had a post at the bulletin entitled: ‘may nagmamahal sau’. I was curiously opened this post and I saw inside, there’s a link/url going to ‘youtube’. I tried to watch the video:

The one who is speaking at the video is… Louie Giglio, (born 1958). He is a Christian pastor/evangelist and founder of Choice Ministries and Passion Conferences, a ministry devoted to the proclamation of the glory of God to college students around the world.

Now, what is laminin again???

Laminin is the major non-collagenous component of the basal lamina, such as those on which cells of an epithelium sit. Basically, laminin is a protein found in the “extracellular matrix”, the sheets of protein that form the substrate of all internal organs also called the “basement membrane”. It has four arms that can bind to four other molecules. The three shorter arms are particularly good at binding to other laminin molecules, which is what makes it so great at forming sheets. The long arm is capable of binding to cells, which helps anchor the actual organs to the membrane.

The laminin protein is made up of three separate parts, called the A, B1, and B2 chains. That gives it a total of six “ends”, which accounts for a lot of its flexibility in connecting up various kinds of molecules. Because of this, scientists who create biomaterials are extremely interested in the whole family of laminins. They are a family of glycoproteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding in almost every animal tissue. Laminins are secreted and incorporated into cell-associated extracellular matrices.

Laminin is vital to making sure overall body structures hold together. Improper production of laminin can cause muscles to form improperly, leading to a form of muscular dystrophy. It can also cause progeria. (from: wikipedia… nosebleed na naman!! hehehe.. =D)

But basically, the purpose ‘laminin’ is to keep our body from falling apart. And every human being has ‘laminin’!!!! It looks like this:

Speaking of Passion Conferences, I was with some of the staff of Passion Movement and other leaders from different churches yesterday (May 12, 2008 ) at Prestige Tower, Roofdeck (at former Emerald ave.) for the PASSION WORLD TOUR 2008 pre-organizing/planning and promotion. They shared their goals, mission and vision of their movement and of this tour here in the Philippines- that is to gather the college students in our country… and it will be focused on the bigness of God, calling the students to WORSHIP, PRAYER and ACTION.

They were also trying to explain to us that it is NOT A CONCERT! It is a venue where the college students and leaders will converge and worship the BIG GOD in Heaven. Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, and Kristian Stanfill will visit the Philippines and be at the conference on Aug. 1, 2008 at ULTRA-pasig… (I don’t know if it is already final.)
